Gratinated Butternut Squash Tian is a flavorful and visually appealing dish that layers thinly sliced butternut squash with a variety of complementary ingredients, baked to a golden perfection. The term "tian" refers to both the shallow earthenware dish used for baking and the Provencal-style layered vegetable dish itself. In this version, the butternut squash is often combined with ingredients such as onions, garlic, tomatoes, and sometimes other root vegetables or herbs like thyme and rosemary. These layers are arranged in a baking dish, often with a sprinkle of cheese such as Parmesan or Gruyère, and a drizzle of olive oil. The dish is baked until the vegetables are tender and the top is beautifully gratinated, resulting in a crispy, cheesy crust. Gratinated Butternut Squash Tian is a delightful and nutritious side dish or main course, perfect for showcasing the natural sweetness and flavor of butternut squash.
Peel the butternut squash and cut it into 0.5 to 1 cm thick slices, removing the seeds. Slice the bread similarly.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (th.6).
Peel the garlic and rub it onto the bread slices. Lightly oil the bread. Brush the butternut slices with oil, then season with salt and pepper.
Arrange the bread and butternut slices alternately in a large baking dish, keeping them almost upright. Insert the bay leaves.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Peel and finely chop the onion, grate the cheese.
Sprinkle the gratin with the chopped onion and grated cheese, and finish baking for another 10 to 15 minutes until well gratinated.
