Cheese toast au gratin

- 12 slices bread (or country bread)
- 300 g Emmental cheese
- 3 eggs
- 40 cl Milk
- 100 g fresh cream
- 20 g Butter
- grated nutmeg
- Salt
- Pepper
- Preheat the oven to th. 7 (210°C).
- Lightly toast the bread slices. (Cut out the crust, if it is country bread).
- Cut the Emmental cheese into thin strips with a paring knife and cover the slices of bread, making sure that the cheese overflows a little.
- Arrange the slices in a buttered gratin dish, overlapping them slightly.
- In a bowl, beat together the eggs, milk and cream. Salt lightly (this cheese is already salty), pepper generously and season with grated nutmeg. Pour this mixture over the bread.
- Bake and broil in the hot oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until the surface is golden brown and crispy.
- Serve hot in the baking dish and accompany with a good green salad or an assortment of raw vegetables: crunchy radishes, celery sticks, cauliflower florets.
